With a new strategy, Ukraine launches kamikaze drones into Russia using ‘mother-drone’ technology (vecstock – Freepik)
The Ukrainian forces used a new attack technology called “mother-drone” to target locations in the Russian region of Kursk.
This type of drone carries two FPV kamikaze drones and acts as a signal repeater, allowing targets to be reached at distances of over 60 kilometers. Each FPV drone carries a 400-gram warhead, enough to destroy unarmored equipment, radars, and air defense systems.
The attack was carried out by the 413th Separate Unmanned Systems Battalion, which targeted engineering equipment involved in the construction of fortifications, about 55 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Images of the operation were shared during a conference on cooperation between the European and Ukrainian defense industries, highlighting the innovation as a significant breakthrough in the field of unmanned systems.

Since December 2024, Ukraine has been testing various formats of mother-drones, including fixed-wing aircraft, balloons, and naval drones. Ukrainian companies, such as Skyeton, have also showcased models like the Raybird, which can carry attack drones and function as a communication station. This year, a tethered aerostat was even developed to launch interceptor drones against threats such as the Shahed drones used by Russia.
